The legendary tenor, Sherrill Nielsen, was born in Montgomery, Alabama on September 10, 1942. He crossed over into eternity on December 10, 2010. A Southern Gospel Concert and Homecoming Celebration of Sherrill's life was held in Cullman, Alabama's First Church of Nazarene on the 16th of December. He was buried in Tyler, Texas at the Cathedral in the Pines Cemetery next to his only child, SherRee' Elicia Nielsen. Ray Walker of The Jordanaires wrote: "Sherrill Nielsen has made his mark on the Gospel Field and on the Commercial Field, as well. Sherrill's heart went into everything he did. His association with Elvis was a highlight in both their lives. Elvis enjoyed and respected Sherrill's heart, artistry and his willingness to share with him and others. Sherrill was one of the good guys." Harrison Tyner wrote: "Sherrill was always a joy to work with in the recording studio -- a true professional; a legendary singer and performer. Listening to the many records we made together over the years, one quickly comes to realize that he was truly a one-of-a-kind, special entertainer. Professionally, none will ever compare to Sherrill. As his producer and manager for many years, I am a witness to the fact that he was simply the best of the best. I know for a fact that he was Elvis' favorite singer and from personal experience I can say with Ray Walker that he was one of the 'good guys.' But, after all the years we spent together, the memory I will always cherish most is of Sherrill as a person; his unwavering loyalty and dedication; his support of loved ones and friends, of which I am proud and honored to say I was one. While writing the song 'Going Home,' I had no idea that it would end up being especially for Sherrill. Rest in peace my friend."
