The USS LST-325, a World War II–era Landing Ship, Tank, recently passed by our Fort Madison, Iowa live train camera. Watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/live/L6eG4ahJ... The ship was built in 1942 at the Philadelphia Navy Yard and commissioned in early 1943. She played a vital role in the Allied invasions of Sicily, Salerno, and Normandy, carrying troops, vehicles, and supplies directly onto contested beaches. Decommissioned after the war, she was later recommissioned during the Korean War era and eventually transferred to the Greek Navy, where she served for more than three decades as Syros (L-144). In 2001, a group of American veterans and volunteers sailed her back across the Atlantic to the United States, and today she is preserved in Evansville, Indiana, as the last operational LST in the country, serving as both a museum ship and a living tribute to those who fought in World War II.
