(21 Jul 2021) LEAD IN: Muslims in the Ivorian city of Bondoukou celebrated the major Islamic holiday of Eid al-Adha, known as Tabaski in west African countries. STORY-LINE: Muslims in Bondoukou, a city in northeastern Ivory Coast, celebrated the Eid al-Adha holiday on Tuesday. They marked the major Islamic holiday, known as Tabaski in west African countries, with communal prayers, social gatherings and slaughtering of livestock. In colourful traditional outfits, men and children headed to the main mosque in the town of Sorobango to perform special Eid prayers. The village DJ, Ouattara Abou, brought out his music equipment to entertain friends and neighbours. "This festival is so precious for us, Muslims. This is a moment that remains in our memory. We must accompany it with joy," Abou said. The townsmen then slaughtered goats as an offer of sacrifice during the Eid. During this holiday, Muslims commemorate the prophet Ibrahim's test of faith by slaughtering livestock and animals and distributing the meat to the poor. Quran teacher Ouattara Drissa visited the town's school to teach children about Islam's holy book and the importance of Eid al-Adha. Tabaski "represents the story of the Prophet Ibrahim, a legend that we also copy today. It is important that we remember it every year," he said.
