Knabe 1928 Grand Piano This 1928 Knabe 5’-8” baby grand piano has a beautiful, rich tone on par with similar American built pianos of this era. It is in very good condition without needing any replacement or parts (i.e. strings, hammers, felts, etc.) and the action is tight and responsive. The piano has been thoroughly checked out by our shop technicians, detailed, tuned, and found to be in very fine playable condition. The sound and tone of this piano is excellent; strong and powerful for its size with rich overtones and long sustain. The cabinet is finished in a beautifully grained and matched American mahogany and retains its original lacquer finish, and although it has a few minor blemishes, overall, it is in very good condition. A padded mahogany bench is included. This piano would be an excellent and affordable choice for any pianist looking for a decent sized parlor grand that possesses all the qualities found in similarly sized classic American grands (Steinway, Baldwin, and Mason & Hamlin) without paying a premium for the name on the fallboard. Although not as well-known as some other manufacturers, Knabe grands from this era are considered some of the finest pianos ever built during the first half of the 20th century, and many pianists prefer them over any other brand. Founded in Baltimore in 1837 by Wilhelm (William) Knabe, a German immigrant, Wm. Knabe & Co. established itself in the 19th and early 20th centuries as one of the finest piano makers in America. Over the years, Knabe pianos have left an important mark on the music field, including over 40 years as the official piano of the Metropolitan Opera, sponsoring Tchaikovsky’s appearance at the opening of Carnegie Hall, and their places inside the White House and Graceland. Today, Knabe is the official piano of the American Ballet Theatre at the Met. 2012 marks the company’s 175th anniversary. As part of the consolidation of the American piano industry in the early 20th century, Knabe eventually became part of the Aeolian family of brands. Following Aeolian’s demise in 1985, the Knabe name became part of Mason & Hamlin, which was purchased out of bankruptcy in 1996 by the owners of PianoDisc. For a time, a line of Knabe pianos was made for PianoDisc by Young Chang in Korea and China. When the line was discontinued, Samick acquired the Wm. Knabe & Co. name. (Note: “Knabe” is pronounced using the hard K sound followed by “nobby.”) atlanticmusiccenter.com 321-725-5690
