It was our first day fishing in Alaska at Steamboat Bay Fishing Club. Our guide Josh Hoogerhyde pulled up to the first spot of the day and we dumped our two Old Town kayaks into the water. He tossed me a bag of salmon skull caps and I hooked them up on to my heaviest rig... a Daiwa Saltiga 50 on the same Adrenaline Custom rod I landed both marlin with. What a deadly setup! Some guests have nicknamed it Excalibur... After fishing for only a short time, I felt a huge bite... and right away I knew it was the one I was hoping for! This fish ended up being 67 inches long which translates to 156 pounds! This is by far the biggest fish I have pulled into my kayak and what a cool feeling that is! When you intend to release a fish like this it is incredibly important that you handle it with caution. We are always sure that if we are to grab the gill plate of a big fish...that we have a secure hold on the toughest part of it and ensure we DO NOT touch the actual gills or serious harm can be done to the fish. A net is usually recommended if possible but depending on the situation this method can give the handler more control over the fish and puts less stress on it than say a mouth gaff or boca grip. We only had the fish out of the water for about a minute and released it to fight another day! Maybe a future guest will catch her when she's 50 pounds bigger!
