In a year of Infinity Wars and Doomsday Clocks, Andrew Rivera is here with a look at why Snagglepuss might be the most important comic character of 2018. » Subscribe to NowThis Nerd: http://go.nowth.is/Nerd_Subscribe With the release of Snagglepuss, DC comics has once again revitalized a classic Hanna-Barbera cartoon in a stunning, satirical new take from comics writer Mark Russell. Making the leap from classic cartoons animation to the comic book page isn’t easy, but Mark Russell and artist Mike Feehan have transformed the pink lion Snagglepuss into a gay New York playwright in 1950s New York City. The character was once best known for the catchphrases of Snagglepluss: Heavens to murgatroyd, Snagglepuss exit stage left, etc. But now, the Snagglepuss DC version will be known for biting social commentary on the nature of paranoia, acceptance, and being true to one’s self and one’s art. Mark Russell didn’t come out of nowhere with his Snagglepuss comic, though. He began his career writing a comedic version of the Bible called ‘God Is Disappointed in You,’ which somehow didn’t cause as much controversy as his later updates of classic Hanna Barbera cartoon characters. After creating DC Prez Beth Ross for DC comics, Mark Russell was assigned to DC’s new line of DC Hanna Barbera comics, where along with artist Steve Pugh, he made a huge impact with his take on the modern stone-age family: The Flintstones. In the DC Flintstones comic, the Flintstones DC live in a world where Yabba Dabba Doo is a mantra to cope with PTSD, and where the sins of civilizations past are brought to bear. The town of Bedrock has never seemed so vivid and real, not even on Boomerang, and the DC Comics Flintstones reboot is one of the most exciting interpretations of the IP ever. The Mark Russell Flintstones comic is a good warmup for his current project, Exit Stage Left: The Snagglepuss Chronicles. By casting Snagglepuss as an artist fighting against himself in a world that want to burn him, the Mark Russell Snagglepuss comic explores the poisonous sin that is nostalgia and the struggles of an artist who can’t be true to himself.
