The story is about Elwood Ralson, a brilliant but psychologically disturbed physicist who works on a secret project to develop a force field generator that can protect humanity from nuclear war. Ralson believes that humans are part of a genetic experiment conducted by an alien intelligence, and that the aliens will use the atomic bomb to destroy humanity if they become too advanced. He also thinks that the aliens are trying to make him kill himself before he can finish his work. He is treated by a psychiatrist, Dr. Blaustein, who tries to help him cope with his delusions and provide guidance to the other scientists working on the project. Ralson manages to complete the project and test the force field successfully, but then commits suicide. Later, another scientist who worked on the project also kills himself, suggesting that Ralson’s theory may have some truth to it. The title of the story is taken from a line in a poem by Sir Walter Scott, "Breathes there a man with soul so dead, who never to himself hath said, this is my own, my native land?"
