The Thames Valley / South East UK The Thames Valley is an informally-defined sub-region of South East England. It is centred on the River Thames, west of London, with Oxford as a major centre. The Thames Valley is a technology hub centred around Reading, considered to stretch as far out as Swindon, Oxford and Slough The area is a major economic hub, which includes part of the M4 corridor, sometimes referred to as England's Silicon Valley. Thames Valley is a major destination for international investment and plays an important role in the UK's economy. It covers over 2,200 square miles, a population of 2.3 million people and three counties: Buckinghamshire, Berkshire and Oxfordshire. Some employers include: Oxford Instruments - a global technology company that produces scientific instruments Johnson & Johnson Innovation - Research & Development centre Sophos - a global cybersecurity company Elsevier - a Dutch publishing and analytics company Oxford Nanopore Technologies - a biotechnology company BMW Group: large manufacturing plant employing c.4,000 people.
