Welcome to our feature about the best authors of children books On March 20th, 1954, Louis Sachar was born in East Meadow, New York. When he was nine years old, he and his family moved to Tustin, California. Sachar was a good student but he didn't really get into reading until high school. The first writers that personally inspired him were Kurt Vonnegut and J.D. Salinger. After graduating from high school, Sachar attended Antioch College in Ohio. Sadly, his father passed away during his first semester, and Sachar returned home to be closer to his mother. After a time, he returned to college life but this time it was at the University of California-Berkeley. One day he saw an elementary school-aged girl handing out flyers on campus. The flyer said that teachers' aides were needed at local schools and that if a college student was a teacher's aide, they could get three course credits. He saw this as an easy way to get credits and signed up to become a second/third grade class at Hillside Elementary School. The experience was life-changing and Sachar greatly enjoyed it. Sachar graduated in 1976 and decided to write a children's book that would eventually become Sideways Stories From Wayside School. Sachar based every child in the story on the children he knew back at Hillside Elementary School. A publisher accepted Sideways Stories From Wayside School during his first week at law school. He graduated from law school and passed the bar exam in 1980. He continued writing but it wasn't until 1989 that he was able to stop doing legal work and focus solely on writing. On average, it takes Sachar between one and two years to finish a book. During that time, he doesn't speak to anyone about the story he is writing. Once it is finished, he then lets his wife, daughter, and editor read it. His favorite color is yellow and he greatly enjoys playing bridge. Sachar's books are both intensely funny and moving. We strongly urge you to check out all of his books; especially There's A Boy In The Girl's Bathroom, The Boy Who Lost His Face, Fuzzy Mud, and Newbery Medal-winning Holes. http://www.louissachar.com/ If you liked the books, don't forget to share and like.
