At Pigeon River Farm, we prioritize the health of our grazing animals and soil. Today’s video dives into essential steps for maintaining balanced nutrition for livestock, primarily cattle, sheep, and goats, and the importance of managing soil nutrients effectively. Here’s a breakdown: Balanced Nutrition for Livestock: Just like humans, animals need a proper diet. Our approach to organic farming ensures that their nutritional needs are met through carefully managed grazing and soil fertility. Soil Sampling & Analysis: Annually, we conduct soil tests through a lab and work with an agronomist specializing in organic farming. This provides insights into nutrient levels, allowing us to adjust our practices. Potassium Management: Over time, we’ve noticed a depletion of potassium in certain fields due to grazing patterns and hay harvesting. Today, we’re applying 200 pounds of potassium per acre to restore optimal levels. Long-Term Soil Health: Potassium application follows a five-year cycle. However, improved land management strategies may extend this cycle to 5-7 years as we continue to monitor the land’s condition. Healthy Livestock, Healthy Food: The minerals and nutrients in our soil directly impact the quality of the meat and livestock we produce. Ensuring that our soil has the right balance helps us raise healthier animals, which leads to healthier food for consumers. As always, we blend science with real-world observations—using both soil tests and drone footage to monitor the land. By doing so, we continue improving our farm and the health of our animals.
