In loving memory of my grandfather, Major James “Jim” Alexander Howard, and in honour of 2/19th Battalion AIF (Australian Imperial Force), who lost more members that any other Australian unit raised in World War II. Jim’s own account of training with the NSW Scottish Regiment, enlisting in Sydney, fighting in Malaya (Battle of Muar, Siege of Bakri, Parit Sulong Bridge) and his remarkable escape from Singapore with four mates, all wounded, as it fell to the Japanese. Also some sober reflections on the futility of war and the psychological effects (including PTSD much later in life). Lest we forget.
