PHETCHABURI, THAILAND - Petchaburi, Central Thailand, is home to many palmyra palm trees. They are also known as sugar palm or toddy palm trees and grow in plantations. I decided to visit one of these sugar palm orchards to see what is sugar palm and how palm sugar is made. It’s an amazing tree, with so many uses, and so important throughout Thailand and throughout Southeast Asia and India. It was very fun to visit the traditional sugar palm farm, especially in rural Thailand. It really did feel like a special experience and I was the only foreign tourist there. It seemed to be a great place to come with the family and learn about the farm. You could also buy products like the palm sugar, palm juice and even Thai food. I first saw this fruit in Cambodia in 2017 during my first trip to Asia. My guide took a photo of me with it, but I had no idea what it was. So when I had the opportunity to visit the traditional Thai farm, I decided to go and find out more. Before visiting this palmyra palm tree fruit plantation, I didn’t know all the different uses of this amazing fruit and tree. Palm fruit cluster Fresh palm sugar sap Palmyra mesocarp pulp Palmyra fruit - Seed socket Germinated seed Phetchaburi is on the way to the famous destination of Hua Hin on the way from Bangkok and it is full of surprises. You have stunning mountain landscapes, the ocean, delicious Thai food, rural farms, tranquil caves and as ever, lots of friendly local Thai people. This Thailand province is very rural, very beautiful, and very fun to travel around by motorcycle on this tour of Southern Thailand. I visit Kaeng Krachan Lake which is a stunning reservoir lake in the province. There are amazing views over the rolling mountains and little islands. I then visit a little fishing village on the coast and stop in a market. Later I head to Tham Khao Luang, a beautiful mountain cave temple in the city of Phetchaburi which King Rama IV of Thailand helped build.
