In this video I will be restoring a vintage miter trimmer/cutter. This tool is commonly used to make picture frames or trim lead slugs for the letterpress industry. I bought this miter on eBay last year. If your familiar with my other videos you may have seen my restoration of another miter trimmer. Once I competed that restoration I began my search for more unique tools to restore. That is when I stumbled across this item on eBay. I was a bit hesitant to purchase it seeing that I already have a miter trimmer. Since this design was different I decided to place my bid. I began by dismantling the tool and cleaning all the grease and loose dirt off all the parts. The next stage was to apply paint stripper. Over the last few weeks my paint stripper hasn’t been working properly. I presume it’s due the the cold weather. I applied the first layer and left it over night. And as expected the result were not in my favour. Before applying the next coat I heated all the parts, to my surprise this worked almost instantly. After a thorough clean I then soaked all the rusty parts in Evapo Rust over night. The next morning I removed and wire wheeled all the pieces. Since this is a unique piece I decided to keep the casting original and limit my impact on the items history by refraining from filing and sanding imperfections. The next and final stage was painting. I decided to copy the paint theme from my first miter cutter restoration (Hammerite hammered silver). Finally I reassembled and tested the tools functionality. I hope you enjoy or enjoyed watching this restoration. Thanks for watching and I’ll see you on the next restoration.
