Each person in the EU generates around 132 kg of #foodwaste every year, adding up to 58 million tonnes and costing billions. However, the EU research project LANDFEED turns this challenge into an opportunity by transforming discarded food and organic waste into valuable, bio-based #fertilisers. The LANDFEED team develops technologies to recover nutrients safely and efficiently from a variety of sources, including dairy and animal waste, olive mill residues, wastewater and HORECA leftovers. At AZTI in Spain, for example, scientists use solid-state fungal fermentation to convert nutrient-rich food waste into new fertiliser components. By using innovative microalgae coatings to enable slow-release nitrogen, the researchers aim to reduce pollution, strengthen Europe’s independence from imported fertilisers and support a truly circular economy. LANDFEED demonstrates how waste can be transformed into a valuable resource and how future #agriculture can become more sustainable, resilient and local.
