On this Week's Show: This week we’re (only slightly belatedly) running through the 12 APTs of Christmas - because we recorded this on Jan 6th which is technically the last day of the festive period We walk through a set of well-known advanced persistent threat groups — where they tend to come from, what they usually go after, and how they actually operate in the real world. Rather than getting lost in tooling or mythology, the focus is on the patterns that keep showing up. As the list builds, a lot of these groups start to blur together. Different names, similar playbooks. Phishing, credential abuse, living-off-the-land techniques, lateral movement, and long dwell time enabled by trust that shouldn’t exist. That repetition matters. It shows that APTs optimise for reliability, not novelty. It also means defence doesn’t need to be bespoke for every named group. Identity controls, monitoring for misuse, segmentation, and limiting privilege still interrupt a lot of APT activity. We also talk about why attribution often distracts from remediation, why “APT” doesn’t automatically mean unstoppable, and how very ordinary failures usually sit behind very serious breaches.
