Suitengu Shrine has a long history in Japan, it was first erected on the southern island of Kyushu in honor of Emperor Antoku, who was only 6 years old when he jumped from a ship into the sea in the hopes of reaching a fabled palace at the floor of the ocean. The God enshrined within is Suiten, the god of water, and over the years, the child emperor and water became associated with childbirth. These shrines became popular across Japan and the first one built in Tokyo was in 1818 (the shrine was recently rebuilt in 2016). Women come here to pray for a safe birth and receive blessings. Today is particularly busy because it is an "Inu no Hi" or a Dog Day. In Japan, it is believed that if you ask for a safe birth on an "Inu no Hi" your labor will be as smooth as a dog's.
