Educational video describing the condition known as bipartite patella. Bipartitie patella is failure of the ossification centers of the patella to fuse. Types of bipartite patella: 1-Inferior pole 2-Lateral margin 3-Superolateral pole Superolateral pole The accessory ossification center at the superolateral pole remains unfused. The patella consists of two bones, the smaller part is rounded and usually located laterally. Can be confused with a fracture. Often is asymptomatic and incidental finding, causing symptoms that mimic those of a fracture. Minor trauma or injury can cause the fibrous tissue to become inflamed and irritated. Treatment of bipartite patella •Rest •Knee Immobilizer •Physiotherapy •NSAID •Excision of the fragment if small •Release of lateral retinaculum to reduce the traction force if needed. •If fragment is large, internal fixation and bone graft is occasionally done.
