Sweden announces the acquisition of Brazilian Embraer KC-390 aircraft and Brazil confirms interest in 72 Swedish Gripen fighters, find out everything now. The main obstacle to the announcement of the acquisition of the second batch of Gripen fighters for the FAB by the Brazilian government was that Sweden would provide, in return, the guarantee of purchasing Brazilian KC-390 transport aircraft. This was what was agreed between the Defense Ministers of Brazil, José Múcio, and Sweden, Pal Jonson, in a high-level meeting at LAAD 2024, a famous Brazilian defense fair that takes place annually in Rio de Janeiro. Well, a year later, during LAAD 2025, which took place last week, the CEO of Embraer Defense & Security, Bosco da Costa Junior, and the Secretary of State of the Swedish Ministry of Defense, Peter Sandwall, announced that the Swedish government has formally committed to acquiring four Embraer KC-390 military tactical transport aircraft. Sandwall said during the announcement that “the C-390’s ability to perform its missions in challenging environments anytime, anywhere will be a critical asset to Sweden’s defense strategy, ensuring effective operations for decades to come.” With this announcement, the Brazilian government is now ready to not only add 25% to the contract for the first batch of Gripen E and F fighters, which would increase from 36 to 45 units, but also announce the acquisition of a second batch, which would be 27 units, totaling 72 Gripen fighters for the Brazilian Air Force. According to sources heard by Reuters, this second batch of Gripen fighters may include some units of the Gripen C model, which is considerably cheaper than the more modern version, the Gripen E. "What we are negotiating is the purchase of the Gripen C. A previous generation. This could help to further increase this Gripen package. We could reach 72 aircraft by combining the C with the E, which is what is coming. The armament capacity (of the Gripen C) is not the same, but it still serves very well", said one of the sources. Additionally, the purchase of the Gripen C is another contract, but these are more efficient aircraft than the F-5s that the FAB currently has. A Gripen E fighter, the most modern version and which was ordered in the first batch, together with the F version, which is its two-seater version, costs around US$ 85 million, while the C version, of which Brazil intends to acquire some units, costs around US$ 68 million. This saving would allow the FAB, with the current budget, to reach 72 units with this second batch. When comparing the combat capabilities of the Gripen C and E models, we can highlight that the Gripen E is much superior, however the Gripen C continues to be a modern fighter with great combat capability, being able to fire the most modern missiles available.
