Many have questioned why Rudolf Hess, Hitler’s Deputy Führer, spent the rest of his life in prison after his solo flight to Britain in 1941. Some saw him as a harmless old man who had sought peace — but the truth is far darker. From his early proposals on “the regulation of the position of the Jews” in 1933 to his participation in drafting the Nuremberg Race Laws, Hess’s influence reached deep into the core of Nazi ideology and policy. His life sentence at Spandau Prison reflected not only his loyalty to Hitler but also his key role in creating the system that made the Holocaust possible. Join me as I discuss whether Rudolf Hess’s sentence was fair, how it compared with others at Nuremberg, and why his crimes should not be forgotten. I have been asked the question on the length of the sentence served by Rudolf Hess, particularly in view of the sentences passed down to others. I can recall in the 1970s and 1980s those who said that he was a poor old man, no danger to anyone and that he should be released. After all, he had voluntarily flown to the UK in an effort to try to find a peace agreement. Therefore he had been treated most unfairly in being locked up for the rest of his life. However he had not always been a poor old man who was no danger to anyone. He had once been a major force in the National Socialist movement and his crimes effected the lives of millions of people. In this presentation I shall present the role of Rudolf Hess in the preparation for the Holocaust. No sooner had the National Socialists been granted power by a group of the conservative elite, than the party including Rudolf Hess started putting racial politics into effect. As early as 6 April 1933, it was he who submitted proposals "for the regulation of the position of the Jews" to Julius Streicher , which later became the " Blood Protection Act ". It is often assumed that it was Streicher who initiated these proposals but that is not so. On 15 May 1934, Heß was appointed deputy leader of the NSDAP's new racial policy office , which was supposed to coordinate the various people responsible for racial policy within the National Socialist bureaucracy. Hess commissioned doctor Walter Groß , whose Christian-nationalist positions he shared, with the management of this office.. Later that year, Hess issued a ban on personal contact with Jews for all party members. I think it is worth considering that many people joined the party not because they believed in it but just to keep their jobs – this is particularly the case with the civil service. Hess personally took part in the formulation of the Nuremberg race laws . From then onwards, all decrees and laws that determined the increasing disenfranchisement of Jews in Germany bore his signature. Heß's tasks included suggesting the members of the Reich Committee for the Protection of German Blood , whom Hitler then appointed. The decisions proposed by the Reich Committee as to who should be considered a “ Jewish half-breed ” and who could be granted an exemption had to be approved by its staff. In 1935, in a circular, he promoted the forced sterilizations provided for by the law to prevent hereditary diseases : As a National Socialist, one should "never allow oneself to be led into a negative attitude, especially not by denominational influences." In the same year, in a speech in Goslar, he spoke of the conspiracy theory that " Jewish Bolshevism ", was to blame for the Treaty of Versailles as well as the hunger and unemployment that followed it. Once WW2 started in September 1939, Hess repeated in almost all of his speeches that the deeper cause of the Second World War was to be found in Jewish machinations/ In 1937, Heß was involved in plans to impose special taxes on Jews in the German Reich. A fundamental part of Nazi policy was the theft of Jewish property, however that needs a definition of what can be termed ‘Jewish’. He was also a co-signatory of the law on tenancies with Jews of 30 April 1939, which exempted Jews from legal tenant protection . In July 1939 he instructed the Gestapo to observe couples whose marriage applications had been rejected for racial reasons in order to prevent them from living together without a marriage certificate.
