Adrienne Magennis has struggled with anorexia nervosa for most of her life. As a child, she was victimized by bullying and criticized for her weight. She tells us how these experiences damaged her self-image, and sent her seeking for a way to get other people to like her. By her late teens, Adrienne was hospitalized and forced into treatment for anorexia. She emerged from hospital still ill, and on her own. Adrienne quickly realized what it meant to fall out of the middle class and to become a mental health patient. Today, Adrienne has a strong relationship with her family, and credits them for their support and positivity throughout her ordeal. In the video below, Adrienne takes us through the stages of her illness, and describes how peer, community, and family support, and determination, are the key factors that have helped keep her alive in her lifelong battle with anorexia.
