The Upper Thames River Conservation Authority is currently removing Gypsy Moth egg masses on Conservation Authority property to reduce the population of this invasive species and help protect trees and shrubs from the caterpillars for spring and summer 2021. Brandon Williamson, Land Management Technician at the UTRCA says, “A UTRCA crew scraped Gypsy Moth eggs off of trees in the campground at Wildwood Conservation Area near St. Marys yesterday." The Gypsy Moth caterpillars can quickly defoliate trees and shrubs. Defoliation by this invasive species in successive years can be very stressful on trees, making them susceptible to other stressors. “We want to alert people to these non-native threats to trees and shrubs,” says John Enright, UTRCA Forester. “We hope that landowners will take measures to protect the trees and shrubs on their property.”
