One of the most renowned symbols of Japan is the Shinkansen bullet train, a remarkable feat of engineering and technological innovation that efficiently connects major cities across the country in just a matter of hours. Over the years, Japan has continuously expanded and enhanced its railway network, ensuring comprehensive coverage of each island and making travel more accessible than ever. In March 2016, a significant milestone was achieved with the inauguration of the Hokkaido Shinkansen. This high-speed rail line connects Aomori on Honshu, Japan's main island, with Hakodate on the island of Hokkaido through the remarkable Seikan Tunnel. Prior to its opening, accessing Hokkaido was a challenging endeavor. However, with a single transfer, travelers can now reach Hokkaido more swiftly and conveniently. Furthermore, there are plans to extend the Hokkaido Shinkansen to Sapporo, with the anticipated opening scheduled for 2030.The Japan Rail Pass covers the new Hokkaido Shinkansen route, including the exceptionally fast Hayabusa train. The Hokkaido Shinkansen is an underwater rail line that connects Japan's main island of Honshu with the northern neighboring island of Hokkaido through the undersea Seikan Tunnel. The Seikan Tunnel is a 53.85 km (33.46 mi) dual-gauge railway tunnel in Japan, with a 23.3 km (14.5 mi) portion under the seabed of the Tsugaru Strait. The tunnel is part of the standard-gauge Hokkaido Shinkansen and the narrow-gauge Kaikyō Line of the Hokkaido Railway Company (JR Hokkaido)'s Tsugaru-Kaikyō Line. The track level is about 100 m (330 ft) below the seabed and 240 m (790 ft) below sea level. The Seikan Tunnel is the world's longest undersea tunnel by overall length and the second-deepest transport tunnel below the surface. The Hokkaido Shinkansen trains have a top speed of 320 kilometers per hour, and the new line connects Aomori (on Japan's mainland) with Hokkaido. It offers an unparalleled level of luxury with their Gran Class cars, surpassing even the comfort and amenities of the green class. Gran Class provides passengers with a dedicated train car that boasts spacious seating arrangements and the undivided attention of a dedicated host or hostess. Typically, trains have one Gran Class car in addition to standard and green cars.
