Hatley Castle was built in 1908 for James Dunsmuir, a wealthy coal baron and former Premier of British Columbia. It was designed by architect Samuel Maclure in the Scottish Baronial style. During World War II, the Canadian government purchased Hatley Castle to use as a training facility for the Royal Canadian Navy. The castle was renamed HMCS Royal Roads, and it served as a naval college until 1995. Today, Hatley Castle is part of Royal Roads University, a public university located on the same property. The castle is used for administrative offices, academic programs, and as a venue for weddings and other special events. Hatley Castle has been used as a filming location for several movies and TV shows, including the X-Men movies, Smallville, and Arrow. The gardens surrounding Hatley Castle are a popular tourist attraction. They were designed by the renowned landscape architect Richard Mawson and feature a mix of formal gardens, natural woodland, and a Japanese garden. In addition to the castle itself, the Hatley Park National Historic Site includes several other historic buildings and features, such as a formal Italian garden, a conservatory, and a bowling alley. Hatley Castle is rumored to be haunted. There are several ghost stories associated with the castle, including the ghost of a young girl who drowned in the nearby lagoon and the ghost of a former gardener who still tends to the gardens at night. 00:00:00 Intro 00:00:15 Parking lot in Royal Roads University 00:01:02 View of the garden 00:01:36 Hatley Castle 00:03:46 Walking up towards the Grand building 00:05:05 Hatley Park Information plate 00:05:29 Castle View from the Neptune crescent 00:06:39 Museum Entrace (closed in the winter)
