The doctor who tried to resuscitate George Floyd took the stand in Derek Chauvin's trial. Dr. Bradford Langenfeld said that the cause of George Floyd's death was Asphyxia meaning a lack of oxygen. The HCMC doctor said that when George arrived, he did not have a heartbeat "sufficient to sustain life". He was not told about suspicions of a possible overdose etc. The prosecutor Jerry Blackwell asked him, "Is there another term for that?" and the Doctor replied, "Asphyxia" . After looking at the whole circumstances he concluded the causes of death adding, "based on the information that I had, it was more likely" that hypoxia, or a lack of oxygen to the body's tissues, was responsible for him being stricken over the other possibilities. He said that when George was brought in it was in an emergency situation. That George's heartbeat was "not to a degree sufficient to sustain life."" George was in "PEA" state, which stands for pulseless electrical activity. There was no pulse but some electrical activity. Low oxygen is one of the causes, he said. It then evolved into asystole (flatlining). He said shocks to the heart cannot revive people in such states. He confirmed that no lifesaving measures were performed by the officers or bystanders before Derek removed his knee from George's neck. The Doctor was asked if George's cardiac arrest was as a likely result of a heart attack. He said that he was not told that Floyd had chest pain or was clutching his chest, along with the fact that he was in a PEA state. When asked whether he believed that George overdosed he replied "I didn't feel there was a specific toxin for which we could give a medication that would reverse his arrest." George came to him after 30 minutes of being in cardiac arrest. He was in cardiac arrest for another 30 minutes plus whilst in the care of the Doctor. George was in full PEA and asystole and the Doctor said that his chances of survival were below 1% chance. He was therefore pronounced dead by this Doctor. The Defence questioned the Doctor and focused on George's use of drugs like opioids Fentanyl and methamphetamine, and that these drugs might have had an effect on George's body and his blood which had extremely high levels of carbon dioxide. It was said that the levels were so high they were life-threatening. This witness who was treated as an Expert said that these illicit drugs found in George's body can cause a person to have a lack of oxygen to the body which can lead to death.
