This episode focuses on the defining quality of Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf (R): generosity with detachment from dunya. He was one of the richest companions of the Prophet ﷺ. But his story did not begin with wealth. When he migrated from Makkah to Madinah, he arrived with nothing. The Ansar offered him half of their wealth and even half of their property. But Abd al-Rahman (R) politely refused. Instead, he simply said: “Show me the marketplace.” With honesty, effort, and barakah from Allah, he slowly rebuilt his business. Soon, he became one of the most successful merchants in Madinah. Caravans filled with goods would arrive under his name. Yet despite his wealth, his heart remained humble. He gave constantly in charity. Once he donated hundreds of camels loaded with goods for the sake of Allah. Another time he gave vast amounts of gold to support the community. And still, he feared that the comforts of this world might reduce his reward in the hereafter. Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf (R) reminds us that Islam does not ask us to reject success.
