After nearly a year of sharing a protected barrier, African elephants Artie and Osh successfully shared direct space in the Buckeye Habitat for the first time. This is the first physical introduction without barriers between the bull elephants. Care Staff observed both elephants engaging in species-typical behaviors that reflected the social dynamics previously seen through the shared fence line. Upon entering the habitat together, Osh approached with measured, deliberate movements and engaged in trunk touches and scent investigation. Artie initially maintained greater distance, pausing and assessing Osh’s approach. Over time, both elephants continued to explore the shared space and alternated between direct interaction and periods of independent foraging. This successful first meeting opens new opportunities for continued socialization and expanded habitat access for both Artie and Osh. Future introductions will continue at a pace guided by ongoing observations of their behaviors and comfort within the space.
