EPA Carvair Prang! | Churchill Falls SEP 29 1968 [NEVER SEEN BEFORE IMAGES!]

JetFlix founder Henry Tenby tells the story of the EPA Carvair prang at Churchill Falls in this video, with exclusive NEVER BEFORE SEEN images taken by Anthony Pleasants. The accident happened on 28 September 28, 1968. The EPA Carvair pilot had limited experience on ATL-98 Carvair aircraft, and possibly wanted to touch down as early as possible on the short runway. The main wheels however struck the top of an embankment about 8 feet from the runway threshold so they overshot and had to feather the number 2 prop immediately, because that engine was not developing power. The aircraft circled for a while and then touched down on its nose gear. The plane settled on the left wing and violently swung off the runway. The accident report states the probable cause was "The pilot's distraction with the landing hazard led him to attempt a touchdown dangerously close to the runway threshold. The pilot was assigned to perform a landing on a marginal landing area." There were 38 occupants, no fatalities, and no injuries, other than bruised egos of the pilots. On October 1, 1968, Anthony Pleasants was co-pilot on a Quebecair F-27 flight from Montreal to Quebec City, Sept Iles, Churchill Falls and return at the same stops. The Captain was Roland Pootmans. He took his 35mm SLR loaded with Kodachrome on the trip having heard about the Carvair accident at Chruch Falls. As they had about 45 minutes to an hour on the ground at Churchill Falls he took an amazing series of NEVER BEFORE SEEN images. Until now.
