My first jazz piano teacher, Bob Doyle, used to tell me, "Leo, you gotta have blues somewhere in your playing." Thursday afternoon was our usual lesson day, and Bob has taught me all the fundamentals of jazz piano. We started off with the basic chords, like all the basic chords in all inversions. Then he taught me how to play blues. One day we were playing a standard, and he just asked me to improvise. Well it didn't sound very good, but Bob sat through it. (Now that I've taught hundreds of lessons, I am fully aware of the pain Bob went through.) Not all lessons were about music though. One day he sat me down and asked me a very important question. "Leo, are you good at or interested in anything other than music?" I probably didn't give him the answer he was hoping for. Then Bob put on a record and went on. "This is Denny Zeitlin. He's a psychiatrist." (I just looked up wiki. Denny taught psychiatry in UCSF while he was active in music.) Sadly I remained kinda dumb and couldn't become a psychiatrist, but that's what makes Denny special. (He's the guy who wrote "Quiet Now", look him up!) Anyway, long story short, this song is dedicated to Bob. He passed away in 2014, and I regret not seeing him more often. Bob's son Aaron plays beautiful trumpet on this track. I used some of the voicings Bob taught me during the solo intro. Bob had a magical way of playing ballad, and he particularly liked the way I played a standard called "When Sunny Gets Blue". Those were the big inspirations went into this song. Hope you like it.
