The American Radio Relay League's January VHF ham radio contest is close at hand. (As of this posting...Jan. 17-18th, 2026) They hold 3 VHF contest each year: January, June & September. Technician class amateur radio licensees can have a blast with this contest because they have privileges on almost all of the bands being used for this contest: 6 meters, 2 meters, 220MHz, UHF-440MHz and on up to 1296MHz. You can participate with just an HT if you are in an urban area or if you live in a densely populated area or an active area for FM simplex work; or a mobile setup in your vehicle or your home shack. There's also plenty of single side band activity on 6 & 2 meters as well. This is always a great time to introduce Technicians to contesting because they have transmit privileges from 6 meters to VHF, 220 MHz, UHF and on up to 1296 which are the bands for this particular contest. So if you are a Technician, get that HT out, or get in your vehicle on your dual band mobile rig and go outside and call CQ Contest during one of the contest weekends! Here's the link on the rules for the contest: https://www.arrl.org/january-vhf Good Luck! 73!
