Today we’re visiting the best place to see rhododendrons in Portland: the Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden. We’ll share the highlights and everything you need to know to visit the rhododendron garden yourself! The peak rhododendron bloom season overlaps with duckling season, so we were lucky to see adorable ducklings swimming in the ponds among the flowers. Crystal Springs is in SE Portland, right across the street from Reed College. Parking can be pretty contentious during the peak rhododendron bloom, and you can’t park on campus, but there’s street parking available in nearby neighborhoods. Peak bloom season for rhododendrons and azaleas is typically April and May, but the garden is beautiful at many times of year. Admission to the garden is $5/person as of 2022, unless you go on a Monday, when it’s free! Children aged 10 and younger can also enter free of charge. The garden is aptly named Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden, as there are no fewer than 13 natural springs in the area. The lake itself isn’t natural; it was originally a creek that was dammed in 1917. But either way, it’s home to a lot of water birds. Volunteers help maintain the garden, and information about how to volunteer is on the garden’s website. Here is the link to the garden website: https://www.portland.gov/parks/crysta...
