Small shawms with a conical bore that widens at the end and produces a loud, impressive sound are an integral part of many cultures and countries. Sometime in the first centuries after the turn of the millennium, they reached Western Europe through contact with neighboring cultures in the south and east. The earliest shawms found in manuscripts are remarkably similar to the traditional instruments still played today in Spain and the eastern Mediterranean region. In the 14th century, the instruments became longer and developed into the standard European shawm. In the late 14th and 15th centuries, it was an incredibly sought-after instrument, along with its larger sister, the pommer, and its brother, the slide trumpet. This trio of loud wind instruments, known today as the Alta Capella, was used in many ceremonial, sacred, and recreational situations. The shawm continued to be used in the 16th and 17th centuries, often in mixed wind ensembles with the newer cornett, posanne, and dulcian. In the 1660s, the first Baroque oboes were built in the workshops at the court of Louis XIV, and gradually this instrument replaced the shawm as the most important high-pitched reed instrument. However, the shawm continued to be played in many places and in various contexts well into the 18th century.
