Hood5six: Jukai 3/25/2023 Market Hotel Brooklyn, NY

I feel privileged to have lived through an era of LIHC that I'll bore my uninterested grandkids about one day. It was a period in time that saw much of the world turn back time for a nostalgic return to the culture of the 1990s. It would show in certain aspects of fashion, art, movies, TV, and music to some extent, especially in Hardcore. The new generation of young fans who came about a few years into the 2010s, were hit particularly hard by that collective nostalgia, as many of them were children during at the time. Whether it was comforting because it reminded them of those happier times growing up or whatever it was that motivated these kids, their overall appreciation for the decade eventually bled it's way in Hardcore. People went nuts celebrating the bands who redefined the genre throughout the 90s and the early 2000s, obsessing over bands like Disembodied, Chokehold, Deadguy, Indecision, Brother's Keeper, Snapcase, 7 Angels 7 Plagues, etc. Even the more obscure Belgian H8000 scene was back in the discussion in a huge way. As dedicated fan of heavy music who fondly remembers much of that time, I was happy to see it since there's no time traveling back to HellFest. I still enjoy stuff from the 80s-90s like Hong Kong/Asian cinema, anime on VHS and VCD, orange Nickelodeon tapes, Hip Hop, Metal, Grind, etc. Why not include Hardcore? In addition to numerous older bands reuniting, there were quite a few new bands who did the 90s Hardcore/Metalcore thing, and I loved most all of it. I'd go hunting for new bands, old bands, old zines, camcorder footage of shows, interviews, and obscure EPs, like the Indiana Jones of B9 the forum and Blogspots. It was on B9 that I discovered a demo from a new Long Island band that caught my eye with their dark artwork. Their music took some inspiration from the 90s, but had certain characteristics that were uniquely their own; incredibly dark melodies interwoven between heavy grooves, longer songs than your average Hardcore bands, Metal riffing that tied everything together, and an interesting use of dissonance. That band was Jukai and I didn't know it at the time, but those first two demos were some of my first exposure to Long Island Hardcore. Before 2013-2014 there weren't many bands tackling the 90s Hardcore, with my two long favorites Incendiary and Foundation being the only ones I remember predating the massive surge in popularity across the global scene. The way I see it Foundation sparked people's interest in the bands that influenced them, especially in the South and other nearby regions. For the East coast however, it was Incendiary that played a big part in introducing people to the mosh jams of old. I can't think of any other way to put it, but as I see it Incendiary crawled so Jukai could walk, and now today's generation of LIHC can run like Usain Bolt. Some of my fondest memories to come out of Hardcore or Long Island as a whole, include Jukai. My friends and I just finished a small DIY tour that ended in Maryland just before Maryland Death Fest (most of us had tickets or backstage passes), but we also wanted to see the Left for Dead matinee at Vitus all the way back in New York. We piled into my friend's sedan despite the long shitty trek there and the even shittier traffic jammed journey back to MDF, but it was well worth it in the end since all three bands played perfect sets. First was NJ Punks Altered Boys and second to last was the original line up for Jukai, featuring vocalist Matt Reed. This was my first time seeing them and I was so blown away, I bought every piece of merch they had. The second time I saw Jukai was opening for Ringworm at The Acheron in Bushwick (RIP) and this was after Matt Reed left, and bassist Zach Barnett moved over to vocals. I could tell they were just getting used to the change in lineups, but it was still a great performance. By the time I saw them next with Vein at Webster Hall, they had ironed out the kinks, and became a force to be reckoned with (you know it was good when Lumpy from Sanction jabs you in the face). I was proud to see them added to This is Hardcore, exposing a wider audience to LIHC, and even though I was on tour, I went back to NY to see their stacked farewell show at Revolution (before heading back out). I'm grateful to have seen Jukai and revisit some of my fondest memories. From the bottom of my heart, I'd like to thank Jukai, Matt Reed, Scanlon, and the entirety of LIHC. Current and former members of Bottom Out, Rule Them All, Crucify Me, High Card, The Fight, and probably a few more past, present, and future.
