For nearly 63 years a #mansion in New Canaan, Connecticut was kept immaculate—polished, guarded, and perfectly maintained by a staff all for its wealthy and mysterious owner who never once lived there and when you learn about where she chose to live instead you’ll be shocked. 😳 This is the story of Le Beau Château and the reclusive copper heiress Huguette Clark who purchased it. The home was built in 1937 by the renowned firm Voorhees, Gmelin & Walker, the same architects behind Manhattan’s Times Square Building. In the 1950s, Huguette Clark purchased the estate that spanned over 14,000 square feet, with 22 rooms, 9 bedrooms, and 11 fireplaces. Over the years she expanded and renovated the home, and yet Huguette never furnished it or chose to spend a night. Leaving the grand French inspired château to stand empty and silent. #mystery To add to the mystery even further this wasn’t Huguette's only abandoned mansion. After inheriting a fortune of around $300 million from her father, Huguette acquired a portfolio of extraordinary homes. ➡️ She owned a 42-room, apartment that spanned across a full floor and a half on Fifth Avenue in New York that overlooked Central Park and is valued at $100 million. The apartment was fully furnished mansion and was literally filled with priceless original artwork and collections from legends like Monet and Picasso. ➡️ Additionally she owned Bellosguardo, another French-style mansion located on 23 acres in Santa Barbara that is perched above the Pacific Ocean. This home was again fully furnished and filled with even more priceless antiques. The mansion was inherited from her mother, and even after her mother's passing in 1963 she continued to spent $40,000 a month to pay a full staff to upkeep this property. She told staff “keep the home perfectly maintained and exactly as it is”. When she left this property in 1953 she never returned leaving the estate untouched and frozen in time for decades. And finally, there was Le Beau Château in Connecticut. In the end, her story reminds us: sometimes the most fascinating homes aren’t the ones filled with people… but the ones that sit in perfect silence, waiting for a story to be told. ↘️ Enjoy History & Exploration? ↙️ Hi, my name is Billy, and I’d like to invite you to step back in time with me through this Historic Estate video series.
