Discover the Siege of An Loc, the brutal 66-day battle from April to June 1972 where approximately 5,000 South Vietnamese defenders held the provincial capital against an estimated 30,000 North Vietnamese troops supported by Soviet tanks, heavy artillery, and anti-aircraft weapons in what became one of the deadliest sustained engagements of the Vietnam War. An Loc sat just 65 miles north of Saigon on a critical highway, making its defense strategically vital during the Easter Offensive—if the city fell, North Vietnamese forces would have a clear route to the capital. What followed was sustained urban combat where ARVN forces proved they could fight and win against overwhelming odds when supported by American airpower. The NVA assault began with massive tank and infantry attacks attempting to overwhelm defenders through sheer force. South Vietnamese units fought building-to-building combat while American B-52 strikes, tactical air support, and supply drops kept the surrounded city from collapsing. NVA forces subjected An Loc to constant artillery bombardment exceeding 10,000 rounds per day during peak periods, destroyed over 60% of the city's structures, and launched repeated ground assaults using Soviet T-54 tanks in urban combat. ARVN defenders responded with fierce resistance, destroying dozens of NVA tanks with LAW rockets and recoilless rifles, holding defensive positions despite horrific casualties and complete encirclement, and surviving on aerial resupply as every ground route was cut off. The casualties were catastrophic on both sides: approximately 2,300 ARVN killed and 8,000 wounded, while NVA losses exceeded 10,000 killed with tank and artillery assets decimated. By late June, NVA attacks faltered under devastating American airstrikes and determined ARVN resistance. An Loc proved South Vietnamese forces could defeat North Vietnamese conventional attacks when properly supported, temporarily dispelling doubts about ARVN combat effectiveness. This is the deadliest 66-day siege where 5,000 defenders held against 30,000 attackers, proving that courage, airpower, and determination could overcome numerical superiority even in desperate urban warfare. #AnLoc #66Days #DeadliestSiege #EasterOffensive #1972 #ARVN #30000NVA #VietnamWar #Documentary #UrbanBattle #B52Strikes #tankbattle
