The webinar was presented on 12th January 2021 by associate professor Sofia Sjöström from The Queen Silvia Children´s Hospital, Gothenburg and associate professor Gundela Holmdahl from Karolinska University Hospital, Stockholm, and is aimed at healthcare professionals. This webinar focuses on Posterior urethral valves (PUV) which is the most common congenital obstruction of the lower urinary tract in boys with an incidence of 1:5000 births. PUV carries a high risk of renal dysplasia, hydronephrosis, vesicoureteral reflux, bladder dysfunction and prenatal oligohydramnios with lung hypoplasia. The surgical treatment with ablation of the valves is a small endoscopic intervention but the long-term consequences of the valves can be fatal. The renal impairment is often progressive and the life-time risk of end stage renal disease is up to 30%. Prognostic factors include prenatal diagnosis and oligohydramnios, nadir creatinine the first year of life, reflux, recurrent urinary tract infections, bladder dysfunction and polyuria. The main goal of treating boys with PUV is to preserve renal function. In this webinar, we will discuss the urological treatment initially and at follow-up. eUROGEN is the European Reference Network for rare and complex urorectogenital diseases and conditions.
