1971 Norton Commando 750 Roadster – Startup After Refurbishment NZ New, Matching Numbers, Ready to Ride This 1971 Norton Commando 750 Roadster is a New Zealand-new, matching numbers bike that had been off the road for three decades before receiving a partial restoration. We’ve since gone through it thoroughly, refurbishing it back to more original specification while keeping a few practical upgrades—most notably retaining the improved 1972 disc brake front end for better stopping power. The engine and gearbox had already been overhauled and both perform extremely well. We’ve spent thousands on new parts and invested countless hours to bring this Commando back to reliable, road-ready condition. A key reliability upgrade is the anti-wet sump valve wired into the ignition circuit, preventing start-up oil pooling and ensuring the bike won’t crank with the valve off. It’s now running on a new Boyer Mark IV electronic ignition system, firing first kick, and breathing through new Wassell Evolution carburettors that we opted for due to better availability and excellent performance. A full rewire was completed using a cloth-type Lucas harness, blending modern functionality with a period-correct appearance. We originally built this Commando to keep for ourselves, but with a few other projects now taking priority, it’s time to pass it on. It starts easily, runs clean with no smoke, shifts smoothly, holds solid oil pressure, and turns heads wherever it goes. The exhaust has that classic Norton growl, and the bike sits on relatively new tyres with plenty of tread—ready for the road.
