In this video, Daniel is crossing off a long-time bucket list experience: getting a tattoo from Whang-Od, the 108-year-old legend in the Philippines. We traveled from Sagada to the remote mountain village of Buscalan to meet this global cultural icon. The journey took us through winding cliffside roads, lush mountain landscapes, and included a short hike to reach the village. Our mission was simple: for Daniel to be tattooed by Apo Whang-Od, the oldest traditional tattoo artist in the world. At 108 years old, she is the last mambabatok—a Kalinga tattoo master who has spent nearly a century hand-tapping designs using a pomelo thorn, bamboo stick, water, and charcoal. In 2023, she became the oldest person ever featured on the cover of Vogue, bringing global attention to this ancient tradition. Her signature design—three simple dots—represents herself and her two grandnieces, who are now continuing her legacy. Daniel also received a traditional Kalinga tattoo from Grace, one of her grandnieces. But this trip turned out to be about so much more than just a tattoo. We explored the peaceful rhythm of village life, walked through terraced rice fields with our guide Belle, shared laughs with locals, handed out candy to children, and even had a heartfelt conversation with Pa-Sad, the village’s oldest resident at 118 years old. This experience was about more than getting inked—it was about connection, culture, and witnessing a way of life that feels beautifully untouched by time. If you’re visiting the Philippines, we absolutely recommend making the journey. And if you do, we highly suggest coming on a weekday—weekends can get crowded, and wait times for a tattoo may stretch to days. Our journey to Buscalan was the perfect way to end seven unforgettable months of travel across Asia.
