Almaty, Kazakhstan’s biggest city, instantly shattered my preconceptions. Modern, vibrant, and full of surprises — this is not the Kazakhstan you’ve seen in Borat. In this video I explore Almaty on foot, starting from my hostel and walking through the leafy streets towards Ascension Cathedral in Panfilov Park — one of the tallest wooden churches in the world, built in 1907 without a single nail. Along the way I share my first impressions of Kazakhstan: the friendliness of the people, how safe it feels, the crazy number of electric scooters, and even how Apple Pay has made getting around super easy. Almaty literally means “Apple City” and was the capital of Kazakhstan until 1997. Today it’s the financial and cultural hub of the country, sitting at the foot of the Tian Shan mountains. This city instantly shattered my preconceptions — and I can’t wait to explore more over the coming days.
