In this presentation, Ade Odunaiya, MD, provides an overview of chronic and end stage kidney disease, discusses kidney transplant as the treatment of choice for kidney failure, and discusses post-kidney transplant and chronic immunosuppression management. Topics include: Burden and causes of kidney disease History of kidney transplant and immunosuppression and the kidney allocation system in the US Kidney transplant eligibility and outcomes Infectious complications post-transplant and techniques to mitigate Metabolic complications post-transplant and management About the Speaker: Ade Odunaiya, MD, MS is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Nephrology, at Stanford University, where she functions within a multidisciplinary team to manage kidney transplant recipients and individuals with impaired kidney function undergoing kidney, liver, and heart transplantation. She completed medical school at the University of Colorado and went to the University of Chicago for her Internal Medicine Residency, and to Stanford University for her General and Transplant Nephrology fellowships. During her training years at Stanford, she completed a Master of Science Degree in Epidemiology, and her thesis resulted in a peer reviewed publication. She has since authored other peer reviewed articles and book chapters on kidney disease and kidney transplantation. She is the Program Director of the Stanford Kidney Transplant Fellowship Program and serves on several national committees related to education and diversity, equity and inclusion including the American Society of Nephrology and the Transplant Nephrology Fellowship Training Accreditation Program. She is the educational co-chair for the Nephrology Section of the National Medical Association. She has served as a site principal investigator for a multicenter clinical trial and is broadly interested in improving clinical outcomes in kidney transplant recipients. She is also the program director of the kidney transplant fellowship program at Stanford University where she oversees 1-2 fellows per academic year to ensure they receive training to be competent kidney transplant physicians. In the past year, she has developed an educational curriculum for the fellows and has monthly meetings with the fellows to deliver/receive feedback and to ensure they are on track towards required competencies for graduation.
