The Unangax̂, or often referred to as the Aleut, are the native people of the Aleutian Islands that divide the Bering Sea from the Pacific Ocean. This video discusses their history, including occupation by the Russians and relocation during World War Two. It also covers other aspects of Unangax̂ society, including their hunting and foraging methods, clothing, homes, and family structure. Correction: As noted by a commenter, I mispronounced Aleut (should be like a-lee-oot instead) and Unangax̂ (should be ooh-nang-ah) in this video. 00:00 Background on the Unangax̂ and their Historic Distribution 00:58 Occupation of the Aleutian Islands and Contact with Russian Explorers 01:25 Unangax̂ Life Under Russian Occupation 02:07 Unangax̂ Life in the Late 1800s and Early 1900s 02:41 Unangax̂ Relocation During World War Two 03:33 The Unangax̂ Subsistence Economy 04:33 Unangax̂ Watercraft 05:18 Unangax̂ Handicraft and Parkas 05:52 Unangax̂ Homes and Camps 06:37 Unangax̂ Family and Social Structure Sources: https://www.apiai.org/departments/cul... https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aleuts https://www.nps.gov/aleu/learn/histor... https://www.nationalww2museum.org/war... https://www.britannica.com/topic/Aleut History, Ethnology, and Anthropology of the Aleut; Waldemar Jochelson; Salt Lake City, University of Utah Press; 2002.
