Google finally fixed its biggest architecture mistake from 2004. For over 20 years, your @gmail.com address was used as your Primary Key—a unique identifier hardcoded across Google's entire ecosystem. Changing it meant potentially breaking your access to Drive, YouTube, and every third-party app you ever logged into. The 2026 update is a masterclass in database migration. Google decoupled the user identity from the email string by moving Gmail to Spanner, their globally distributed database. By using TrueTime (GPS and atomic clocks), they can now sync your new identity across global data centers instantly. Now your account is tied to a permanent, hidden UUID, while your email address is just a flexible label. Important constraints to know: 1. You can only change your username once every 12 months. 2. Your old address remains as a permanent alias so you don't lose old mail. 3. There is a lifetime limit of 4 username changes per account.
