DERBYSHIRE DALES PARISH #2: MARSTON MONTGOMERY Marston Montgomery is a small isolated village in the Derbyshire Dales which lies some four miles from the town of Uttoxeter. The nearest local villages are Cubley and Norbury. Marston is a common British placename, and like many Marstons up and down the country, the sub-soil here is clay and the ground is frequently moist That’s no coincidence because Marston means “marsh homestead”. After the Norman Conquest, the village was owned by a knight called Montgomery, whose seat was at neighbouring Cubley Marston sits in an area of abundantly rich farmland, which means dairy farming was, and still very much is, a very productive local industry Its known that in the 17th century, merchants in Uttoxeter were selling cheese and butter on a large scale and its almost certain that nearby Marston was a valued source of milk for this A hundred or so years later, in the 19th century, a cheese factory was set up in the village, but it didn’t last long, being unprofitable as the industrial revolution passed Marston by Its never had main roads, canals, railways or any natural resources, apart from clay used by two local brickyards.
