This performance was filmed at The Barbican in London, which was closed at the time, and it was amazing to be able to create something expressive amongst all the suppression. This is the first of four songs I’m revealing over the coming weeks called ‘The Barbican Tapes’. Beyond the surface of being just a good old love song, ‘Do it now’ is a viewpoint on the problematic nature of traditional gender roles in heterosexual romantic relationships, where men are expected to be the proactive party while women passively accept or decline advances. I wanted to question why women are robbed of their agency and why there is traditionally a need for a ”male” and ”female” roles in some elements of a relationship. The song is about a man’s desire to be wanted and a woman’s right to express her desires openly.
