Meconium is the stools, which is formed inside the womb of the mother when they are in the womb of the mother. If there is any stress in the baby, like oxygen supply is lesser in the baby’s system. So he or she passes the stools inside the womb itself. Normally babies don’t pass stools inside the womb. After the delivery only they pass stools, in the first 24 hours only they pass stool’s or meconium, within 24 hours after delivery. Because of various reasons, be for the preterm baby if there is any infection, they can pass stools inside the womb itself If they are stressed up, not properly supplied with oxygen, they can pass meconium. So meconium is the faecal matter. It is going to be in the fluid, amniotic fluid baby normally breathes in the amniotic fluid of the mother. So when they are breathing, they can swallow this meconium inside the tummy. So when the baby delivers, at the time of delivery, if the baby is active, that is if he or she is crying, moving her limb and heart rate is good, they are good enough to push the meconium from entering into the vocal cord or the windpipe. If they are breathing well, they are prevented from getting aspirated. If the baby is not crying, if the baby is not active, if the baby’s heart rate is less than 100, if the baby’s movements are less, if the baby is crying, breathing itself is a difficulty. Then they gasp and then th4ey aspirate the meconium inside the windpipe. So the aspirated meconium goes inside the lungs. This is going to plug inside the lungs. So there will be areas of patches of this meconium inside the lungs, which makes the baby difficult to breathe and hence they breathe fast. So if the baby has aspirated meconium, the baby is definitely going to have a respiratory distress. There is going to be fast breathing, baby is going to have retractions and the baby is going to have a grunting. And so baby will have a respiratory distress, if they are going to aspirate meconium after delivery.
