At 2:21 in the 2nd period, a delayed call on the Whalers stopped play. After Andrew Higadera was sent to the box for a penalty, a verbal dispute happened between the Nordiques and Whalers players on the rink. After a few words both ways, The Nordiques Leonard and the Whalers Chenault dropped the gloves an engaged in a shoving contest, with a few punches being thrown. Brad Volk of the Nordiques jumped in as the 3rd man and started a line brawl. Shaun Dowdy and Matt Mahon went in to pull the players apart, as did the coaching staff of the Whalers. Jen Fisher paired up with Dan DiNapoli but never engaged in any sort of physical dispute. After everything was settled there were 3 ejections, 2 fighting majors handed out, multiple suspension and it was 4-on-4 hockey. The Whalers would then take another penalty half way through the 4-on-4 and the Nordiques would then get the first powerplay of the night. The Whalers eventually went on to win the game by a score of 3-2.
