Join us for dramatic winter steam on the world-famous Bethlehem–Bloemfontein line in South Africa, where the mighty 4-8-4 Class 25NC locomotives still ruled the rails in 1984. • • • You might not associate Africa with cold weather—but you’d be mistaken. Often called “a world in one country,” South Africa includes regions with harsh winters. In fact, it's ranked the third coldest country in Africa, and we're headed straight into the eastern Orange Free State, where some of its chilliest weather can be found. • • • Our journey focuses on the stretch of line closest to Bethlehem, not only for its spectacular scenery, but also for its ideal train timings—often coinciding with sunrise, creating some of the most breathtaking visuals you'll see on steel. Welcome aboard one of South Africa’s most iconic railway journeys—from Bethlehem to Bloemfontein. This legendary line winds through the golden heart of the Free State, where vast farmlands meet endless skies, and echoes of steam still linger in the air. Once ruled by 25NCs, this 180 mile route is pure railway magic—rich in history, scenery, and timeless charm. By 1984, steam locomotive traction was rapidly vanishing across South Africa. Yet the Bethlehem–Bloemfontein line remained proudly 100% steam and it was always one of our personal favorites. We visited this line more than half a dozen times, riding the passenger trains, sleeping in the overnight berths, and even having the rare privilege of running the engines ourselves. • To our knowledge this is among the earliest sound recordings of steam railroading in South Africa. Captured with on board mic with sound Super 8 and professionally transferred, it remains a joy to watch. You will see in a moment we are back to our favorite spot, Barnea There were many reasons for this. The overnight train from Bloomfontein was scheduled there at 7.19am if running on time. The odds are this was going to the first available light but you would push out the line to get first light sun just in case it was running late. On this day it was on time and the line was still shaded as the train approached the summit of Retiefsnek. But the shot leaving Barnea was superb as hoped and the 25nc was worked hard on the final grade to Bethlehem. The glint was wonderful icing on the cake. This is one of those shots with a story behind it when everything worked right. The daily passenger from Bloemfontein was scheduled to arrive each day at 6.15 in Bethlehem but this was after the sun went down. We knew there was some great grades and scenery before Slabberts but getting there was an unknown. With time running out we went down typical South African washboard dirt roads across farmers fields on dirt tracks, through gates and through barbed wire fences. What he found was a wonderful scenic overlook. The result was a beautiful shot of the 25nc with a sharp staccato exhaust snaking her way thru the S curves to Slabberts. Our program closes with an appropriate and quintessential South African scene with the overnight Bloemfontein train departing Slaaberts for the final run to Bethlehem. It’s all here. First morning golden light, cold weather, plumes of smoke and a 25nc making a lot of racket. Sadly our stay at Bethlehem would also be the last time we saw South African Railways regular service steam. a href="https://www.vecteezy.com/free-videos/..."South Africa Map Stock Videos by Vecteezy
