Donate now: http://www.92NY.org/Donate Peter Galassi, Director of the Department of Photography at the Museum of Modern Art, moderates a conversation with documentary photographer, Tina Barney. This is the final part of the 1992 Artists’ Visions series. Galassi introduces Barney’s work, emphasizing that “the word 'documentary' is a designation of style and not a claim on the truth.” Barney shares slides of her work and discusses the development of her style and approach to photography, including how she directs her subjects and the environment. The subjects of her photographs are usually friends and family. Although she has more easy access to the content of her work, she describes the difficult feeling that her photography, and photography in general, is an intrusion or an “invasion of privacy.” The lecture is followed with questions from the audience.
