Trauma, Stigma, and Healing: A Cultural Lens on Health Disparities

Why do well-designed health interventions fail in diverse communities? This lecture explores how cultural beliefs shape mental illness stigma, why forced migration creates psychological burdens that standard diagnoses miss, and how systemic racism produces trauma across generations. Drawing on two decades of global health fieldwork—including community mental health programs with conflict survivors in Colombia—this talk examines the intersection of culture with mental and physical health outcomes.
