"Hobo Bill's Last Ride" was recorded in the late twenties by Jimmie Rogers AKA "The Singing Brakeman" and "The Blue Yodeler". I first heard this song from Merle Haggard's "Same Train, A Different Time: Songs Of Jimmie Rodgers" LP. "Hobo Bill's Last Ride" was written by Waldo O'Neal during the Depression when many men would hop on freight trains to travel to other towns in search of work. It was quite dangerous because the railroad police would beat them if they were caught or they could die from exposure. I'm sure "Hobo Bill's Last Ride" brought tears to many a mother's eye when they heard this. Just like Haggard's recording, I left out the last verse which is a bit much. "It was early in the morning when they raised the hobo's head, The smile still lingered on his face but Hobo Bill was dead, There was no mother's longing to soothe his weary soul For he was just a railroad bum who died out in the cold." I copied that nifty guitar riff at the intro from Haggard's great guitarist Roy Nichols. Enjoy. - FK
