Das Schloss Wildberg, früher Burg Wildberg genannt, liegt über dem Taffatal im wunderschönen Markt Messern, nordwestlich von Horn im Waldviertel in Niederösterreich. 1135 wird Wildberg als "Wiltperch" erstmals urkundlich erwähnt. Die Burg gehörte den Herren von Wildperch, einer Zweiglinie der Grafen von Poigen. Im 13. Jahrhundert gelangte sie als landesfürstliches Lehen an die Grafen von Vohburg, Parteigänger der Staufer - dann an die Herren von Maissau. Die Herren von Puchheim, ab 1432 im Besitz der Burg Wildberg, bauten diese zum wehrhaften Schloss aus, das auch während der kriegerischen Wirren des 17. Jahrhunderts als Zufluchtsort diente. Ende des 16. Jahrhunderts errichteten sie hier eine Druckerei für evangelische Schriften und bauten die Burg zum Renaissanceschloss um. Die Druckerei machte Wildberg mit dem Horner Bund zu einem Mittelpunkt des Protestantentums in Niederösterreich. Um- und Ausbauten im 16./17. Jahrhundert haben von der mittelalterlichen Anlage nur das Grundgemäuer belassen. Sehenswert sind Palas, Rauchküche und Schmiede. Vom 18. bis zur Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts gehörte das Schloss zur Herrschaft des Stifts Altenburg. Später wurde es mit Unterstützung des Denkmalamtes vom Burg- und Schlösser-Erhaltungsverein Wildberg-Kaja teilweise restauriert. Heute ist Schloss Wildberg in Privatbesitz und nicht zugänglich. Wildberg was first mentioned in a document in 1135 as "Wiltperch". The castle belonged to the Lords of Wildperch, a branch of the Counts of Poigen. In the 13th century it came to the Counts of Vohburg, partisans of the Hohenstaufen as a sovereign fief, and then to the Lords of Maissau. The Lords of Puchheim, who owned Wildberg Castle from 1432, expanded it into a fortified castle that also served as a place of refuge during the wars and turmoil of the 17th century. At the end of the 16th century they set up a print shop for Protestant writings and converted the castle into a Renaissance palace. Together with the Horner Bund, the printing company made Wildberg a center of Protestantism in Lower Austria. Conversions and extensions in the 16./17. Century have left only the foundation walls of the medieval complex. The hall, smoke kitchen and smithy are worth seeing. From the 18th to the 20th century, the castle belonged to the rulership of Altenburg Abbey. In the 20th century it was restored by the Wildberg-Kaja Castle and Palaces Conservation Association with the support of the Monument Office. Today, Wildberg Castle is privately owned and not accessible.
